Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.” –Harriet Tubman

Our recent induction ceremony for the veterinary class of 2022 was a celebration of new beginnings and the fulfillment of dreams. The event represented an academic and career milestone for our new students. Their nervousness and joy was on full display as each walked across the stage to put on the white coat, a symbol of entrance into their professional lives and a first step toward their goal of becoming a veterinarian.

The academic cycle is one of constant renewal as each new class of students comes to us to learn the knowledge and skills that will launch them into the world. Our new class of veterinary students, like so many before them, comes to us with their own histories, talents, and dreams. Each of them has their own story to share with us. As we teach them, they will impact our lives, adding to our own tapestry of experiences.

We have admitted an amazing group of students with a variety of life experiences that have a chance to change the world. The Class of 2022 comes to us from a variety of backgrounds, reflecting the diversity that will become a strength of their experiences during veterinary school. With backgrounds as diverse as military families to first generation college students, they share the common goal to advance the health of animals and heal humanity.

Before coming to us, many of our new students had opportunities to travel the world, from South America to Borneo. They have many talents beyond the classroom, including several collegiate athletes and accomplished musicians and dancers. Others are very active in outdoor activities including scuba diving, skydiving, and trail running. Their work experiences prior to veterinary school are varied from investment banking to wildlife management. Collectively, they represent some of the most talented and brightest members of their communities.

As we embrace the Class of 2022, we will share our vision with them, to lead veterinary medicine and address societal needs. They are now part of that vision and our collective future. The new class will learn the knowledge and skills of veterinarians in our society, including their roles as leaders addressing issues that integrate human health and the stewardship of our global environment. It is our job to guide and teach them, as they begin their journey, focusing their passions and dreams into actions that bring about positive change in the world.
